Fear in rural areas of El Salvador due to the military siege of Bukele

In the community of Santa Marta, in the north of the country, five of its community leaders have been arrested in recent months and are accused of murdering a woman in the context of the civil war. The inhabitants of the area, belonging to the department of Cabañas, have expressed fear of possible new arrests in the context of the installation of a security fence protected by the emergency regime measure.

The community, through the Santa Marta Social Economic Development Association (ADES), of which the men were members, demanded the release of their leaders, a request to which the United Nations has joined, through the Office of the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders.

The fences are protected by the regime, decreed since March 2022 and which suspends some constitutional guarantees, and the period of time in which they will be in force is unknown.
