Metro C line closures due to power line upgrades

Starting Saturday, part of Metro’s C (Green) Line service will be phased out so the agency can replace the light rail power lines between Hawthorne/Lennox and Redondo Beach stations.

The transit agency announced this week that it will suspend service and close select stations on Line C when it begins long-term replacement of its light rail power lines. Continued replacement of the overhead power lines is needed as the light rail line approaches 30 years of service, with work continuing through September 25.

Metro will provide free bus service to replace suspended rail service at all closed stations, including Aviation/LAX, Mariposa, El Segundo, Douglas, and Redondo Beach.

Metro recommends that C Line riders allow approximately 10 to 30 minutes of additional travel time when using the shuttle buses between affected stations. Travel times will vary based on time of day and customer destinations.

“Maintenance of its rail lines is a top Metro priority and will ensure that rail riders have a safe and reliable ride,” Metro said in a statement. “Metro thanks its passengers for their patience during these power line improvements and apologizes in advance for any inconvenience.”

The first series of station closures will take place in separate phases, including:

  • Stations between Hawthorne/Lennox and Redondo Beach Aug. 12-19;
  • Stations between Aviation/LAX and Redondo Beach from August 20 to September 25. Metro Ambassadors will be available to assist customers on the shuttle buses aboard the Hawthorne/Lennox station, as well as provide other assistance in finding your way. The power line upgrade project is part of Metro’s State of Good Repair Program, which seeks to keep existing and future transit assets in good working order while upgrading the overall transit system.

The work will also allow Metro to perform maintenance and repair work at all closed stations and along the tracks. Customer experience and safety improvements will also be made to lighting, signage, public address systems, cameras, and passenger/emergency phones.

With the absence of train traffic during these times, Metro will be performing more intensive cleaning at the stations, including painting, brush removal and various other tasks to ensure facilities remain in good condition for passengers.

Dates for all future work will be announced in advance. The upgrades are expected to take several years to complete.
