Fidel Castro's grandson boasts luxurious life on social media, while Cubans suffer

MIAMI.- Sandro Castro, grandson of the late dictator Fidel Castro, shows off his luxurious life on social media amid the economic crisis Cuba is going through. This situation has caused outrage among Cuban users who are daily hit by the needs.

Castro posted a photo on Instagram, in which he appears in the luxurious “El Patrón” estate, posing seated on a comfortable sofa and wearing items from brands that are impossible to acquire in the Caribbean nation.

Dozens of users commented on social media that the clothes, shoes and furniture in the image cost hundreds of dollars, something that the average Cuban does not have access to these ostentatious luxuries with the meager salary they earn.

“Sandro Castro, Fidel Castro’s grandson, does it again. He uploads his photo to social media, showing off his life as a capitalist. Drinking whiskey, wearing Nike sneakers and his beloved iPhone. The typical hypocrisy of communists,” wrote a user identified as Mayra Dominguez.

Another Cuban user wrote ironically: “Enjoy, because your grandfather sacrificed an entire village for this.”

Capitalism in the Castro family

Castro is part of an elite of businessmen connected to the Cuban dictatorship who have amassed a fortune, while the country sinks into the worst economic and social crisis since the 1990s.

The criticism comes as the island’s inhabitants suffer daily from a difficult economic situation, caused by a shortage of food and medicine, and a lack of employment that has led them to live in misery. However, Castro’s publications reveal a clear contrast between the families close to power and ordinary citizens.

This is not the first time that Fidel Castro’s descendant has flaunted his luxuries and set social media alight. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was also accused of ignoring health measures and displaying a life of luxury.

At the beginning of the pandemic that hit the world in 2020, the Ministry of Culture suspended the holding of public events and parties in Casas de la Música and nightclubs. However, Castro, who owns two venues, one of them located at 23 and F in Vedado, Havana, did not seem to care about the restrictions and did not close the doors until the last moment.

Likewise, in 2021, a video circulated on social media in which Castro appeared driving an ostentatious Mercedes Benz at full speed, which went viral amid controversy over whether it was a display of opulence within the late dictator’s family, which Sandro denied, assuring that the car did not belong to him and had been lent to him by an “acquaintance.”

Sandro Castro is the son of Alexis Castro Soto del Valle, one of the five children of Fidel Castro and Dalia Soto del Valle, the second wife of the late Cuban dictator, with whom he was until his death in 2016.

Furthermore, he is not the first member of Fidel Castro’s family to draw criticism for posting content on social media showing a luxurious lifestyle. Tony Castro, also the grandson of the Cuban leader, made headlines in the media in 2019 for the photos of trips and luxuries he posted on his Instagram account, which although it is currently private, many were published by other users and media outlets.
