New Lion.- Specialists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) made history by performing the first double lung transplant in a public institution in the country on a 54-year-old patient, originally from the state of Tamaulipas, who was forced by an illness to depend on a tank of oxygen.

The operation took place in the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) of Cardiology Hospital No. 34 in the state of Nuevo León.

The donor was a 27-year-old man who suffered brain death and his family made the decision to donate his organs.

In the intervention, which lasted approximately six hours, a team confirmed by “specialists in pulmonology, chest surgery, intensive care, transplantologists, specialist nurses” participated, among others, said the general director of the IMSS, Zoé Robledo.

He also explained, in a message posted on social networks, that the UMAE 34 obtained in May 2022 the license from the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), which allows it to carry out this type of procedure, which has allowed it to to become the only public institution that offers a new alternative for those who suffer from terminal chronic pulmonary diseases.

In Mexico there are 22,584 patients waiting for a transplant, mostly a kidney, a cornea, a liver and a heart, according to the National Transplant Center.
