Florida could break record for travelers on Christmas and New Year

MIAMI.- From July 15 to 20, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and its partners in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee will step up the fight against speeding in a joint initiative called ‘Operation South: Slow Down.’

This annual campaign, which has already become a tradition, seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of speed and reduce road tragedies.

The statistics are alarming: in Florida, speeding has already caused more than 1,400 deaths so far this year, and accounted for 10.5% of all traffic fatalities in 2022, according to official figures.

“These numbers are not just numbers, they represent family and friends who are no longer with us,” said FHP Maj. Matthew Williams.

“It’s not just about tickets, it’s about saving lives,” said FHP Lt. Indiana Miranda. The goal is to educate the public about the risks associated with speeding and encourage safe driving practices, she said.

Increased surveillance

During the operation, authorities in the five states will intensify surveillance and public education, with the implementation of special speed control operations.

“FHP will work with our law enforcement partners to provide roadway safety,” said FHP Director Col. Gary L. Howze.

Collaboration is key to this initiative. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and local law enforcement agencies, including Tallahassee Police, are joining FHP to increase road presence and combat speeding and aggressive driving.

Recommendations for a safe trip:

  • Plan ahead and consider increased traffic during peak hours.
  • Wear your seat belt and make sure all passengers do too.
  • Reduce speed in construction zones, where activity increases in summer.
  • Be patient behind the wheel, avoid aggressive maneuvers and give other drivers space.
  • Be especially careful at dusk and at night, as wildlife frequently crosses the roads.

Authorities asked to remember: speed not only puts your life at risk, but also the lives of others. #OperacionSur #Desacelera #SeguridadVial
