At least three people have been killed in a gun attack in the US state of New Mexico, according to police. Two police officers were injured in the incident, which took place in the 50,000-person town of Farmington, about 200 miles from the state capital, Santa Fe. The suspected shooter was “caught and killed” at the scene, authorities said.

The exact course of the attack was initially unclear, the investigation continued. “There are several civilian victims and at least three dead,” the police said on the online service Facebook. The injured police officers were being treated in the hospital and their condition was stable. The identity of the shooter was initially unclear.

Local schools were temporarily closed before reopening in the afternoon. “All school children and teachers are safe,” the school board said.

According to the non-governmental organization Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 215 gun attacks in the United States this year.
