The climate protection group Extinction Rebellion has called on the federal government to do more to combat species extinction. Several people in animal costumes gathered for a flash mob in Berlin’s main train station on Saturday. A banner read “Species Conservation Immediate Program!”. A later demonstration, which was supported by the organizations BUND and Greenpeace, among others, drew attention to the topic.
“Mass extinction and the overexploitation of seas, soil and forests threaten the nutrition and health of billions of people on earth,” said Extinction Rebellion’s call for action. The group called for a “biodiversity emergency” to be declared. In addition, a phase-out of pesticides by 2030 and a council with citizens on the subject of species protection are needed.
According to the police, several hundred people took part in the demonstration entitled “Call for a state of emergency and stop species extinction!” on Saturday afternoon. In the morning there had already been a bicycle demonstration, some of which took place on the motorway and was intended to promote a different traffic policy. According to the police, around 100 people took part.
In the past few days there have been several protest actions by the groups Extinction Rebellion and Last Generation in Berlin. On Thursday, activists smeared buildings with oil-like black paint and called for faster climate protection. At the Hotel Adlon, activists also unfurled a banner with a dinosaur head from a balcony that day and set off smoke bombs. (dpa)
