Flatulence is a natural part of the digestive process, and it is perfectly normal for the body to pass gas throughout the day. However, the bad smell should not be a constant, since it is mainly determined by what we eat.

According to the Canadian Society for Intestinal Research, only 1% of the gases we emit should have an odor. These flatulence would be caused by the action of bacteria that help with digestion.

However, the greater the need for the help of bacteria, the more gases are retained and the stronger the odor. Some foods require extra effort to digest and are the main enemies of those who don’t want to release unpleasant smells – and we’re not just talking about eggs and cabbage.

In an interview with the newspaper The Sun, British nutritionist Alex Glover listed five of the main foods that cause gas, but also warned: not always the smell of flatulence is just an inconvenience. It can also be a sign that something is wrong with the digestive system.

“If you’re worried about your flatulence, it’s best to go get a gastro checkup and avoid self-diagnosis,” says Glover. Check out the main culprits of bad smell:

1. Meat

The consumption of red meat, both beef and pork, gives extra work to the bacteria in our intestinal microbiota. Food takes a long time to digest and ends up fermenting inside our digestive system.

2. Protein supplements

Great allies when it comes to increasing muscle mass, hydrolyzed milk-based proteins, the famous whey protein, may be behind a bad smell in gases.

“The process is the same as with meat: digesting proteins forces our body to use bacteria more, which end up producing more hydrogen sulfide, one of the chemical compounds that gives odor to flatulence”, highlights the nutritionist.

3. Broccoli

The very smell of this vegetable when being cooked already reveals parts unpleasant to the smell in its chemical composition. It has a lot of sulfur, as well as eggs, which are traditionally responsible for the bad smell of gases.

4. Wine and beer

Anyone who has ever spent a night out with a lot of alcohol knows that the bill comes when it’s time to go to the bathroom. Most alcoholic beverages are fermented, as is the case with wine and beer, and therefore contain sulfur in their composition.

When this compound builds up in the digestive system, the gas takes on a bad smell. In addition to the olfactory problem, alcohol abuse also kills part of the digestive microbiota and therefore recurrent episodes of diarrhea after excessive drinking.

5. Peas, soybeans and lentils

Although beans have the worst reputation, all legumes, the family of vegetables to which they belong, end up causing unpleasant smells in gases. Items such as: lentils, peas, chickpeas, peanuts and, of course, all varieties of beans are included in the account.
