Flood and thunderstorm watches issued for DMV areas

A flash flood and thunderstorm watch is in effect for DMV areas until 9 pm Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The agency envisions heavy rain and the possibility of wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour. Hail is also possible, but the risk of tornadoes is low.

Telemundo 44 Meteorologist Joseph Martinez anticipated that the severe weather system is expected to move quickly through the Washington DC area.

The expert explained that the weather conditions that were reported on Monday and those that are expected on Tuesday are due “to the passage of a weak cold front that will not bring cold, but will bring a pause to the very humid conditions.”

On Monday, the NWS issued a tornado watch for Charles County in Maryland and Fairfax, Alexandria and Arlington counties in Virginia.

Although the agency did not confirm whether any of the tornadoes touched down, streets were closed and some drivers had to be rescued in Alexandria.

In addition, several dogs died after the District Dogs animal care center in northeast DC flooded, authorities said. Officials rescued several employees and approximately 20 dogs.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A SEVERE STORM

Martínez listed the steps to follow in case your area is at risk of a severe storm:

  • Gather emergency supplies like flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and water
  • Have important documents on hand
  • Close gas valves

DRY CONDITIONS PREVAIL

After the risk of severe weather on Monday and Tuesday, the sun will return for the rest of the week, according to the meteorologist.

“Starting Wednesday, the sun returns and conditions are quite dry until the beginning of next week,” Martínez said.

Temperatures will stay in the high 80’s and low 90’s range.
