Flower market in Colombia does not want to wither, bets on Valentine's Day in the US

Colombian flowers are preparing to become Valentine’s Day gifts in the United States with the hope of growing sales in that country, its main market and on which the sector declares itself “dependent” as it is the destination of 80% of its production.

The season generates 27,000 temporary jobs in the country, 65% of which are occupied by women, according to the Colombian Association of Flower Exporters.

The flower sector achieved record exports during the pandemic by exceeding the barrier of 2,000 million dollars. Quarantines and restrictions made people stay home and want to decorate them with flowers.

After the pandemic, they returned to life outdoors and decreased the consumption of flowers in their homes.

However, in the flower sector there is optimism for the current season in which they expect to grow in sales. On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, they estimate that more than 700 million stems will be sent mainly to the United States.
