Food supply: protein gap shrinks to 70 percent

Berlin (ots)

Rapeseed remains the mainstay of the protein supply. Better security of supply through new breeding techniques, renewable energies and oil plant cultivation.

On the occasion of today’s hearing in the German Bundestag on food self-sufficiency, OVID, the association of the oilseed processing industry in Germany, states the degree of self-sufficiency with protein feed such as rapeseed, sunflower and soy meal for 2021 at 30 percent. This is an increase of two percentage points compared to the previous year. The German protein gap was thus reduced to 70 percent. “These are positive developments. Nevertheless, there remains a supply gap that can be closed with imports such as soy,” emphasizes OVID President Jaana Kleinschmit von Lengefeld.

Climate change is a challenge for agriculture, which is already transforming under rising environmental standards and production costs. Security of supply remains a key issue. Pragmatic solutions are required. The new breeding techniques can provide answers. These include positive environmental effects through potentially lower use of pesticides, lower production costs and at the same time a contribution to security of supply. “Fear and scaremongering are bad advisors. Adaptation to climate change will not succeed without the courage to use the technology that has won the Nobel Prize,” says Kleinschmit von Lengefeld.

Germany’s security of supply also includes the debate about competitive energy prices. “The energy costs, which are far too high in international comparison, are a burden on the competitiveness of food production in the country and must be remedied immediately. Emigration is the logical consequence. The creeping process of deindustrialization has long since begun in Germany. We urgently need a cost-effective and climate-neutral energy supply for the energy-intensive and manufacturing industries. This is the only way to ensure that domestic food production can be maintained,” concludes Kleinschmit von Lengefeld.
