Essen.
The so-called “Roadpol” control week has started. In Essen, the police focus on speed enforcement.

From Monday, Essen is supposed to be a hot spot for speeders: the police are targeting speed offenders on the streets more closely. The intensive speed enforcement is part of the Europe-wide “Roadpol” control week from April 17th to 21st. The abbreviation stands for “European Roads Policing Network”, an association of traffic police directorates of the EU member states.

As Matthias Werk, spokesman for the Essen authority, reported on Tuesday, in the coming week all available forces of the traffic service will monitor compliance with the speed limit on inner-city streets.

2736 speed offenders caught in 36 days

Most recently, at the beginning of last year, the Essen police felt the speed offenders on the tire during an even larger control campaign: As part of “Good intention”, the officers caught 2736 rule breakers within 36 days, with controls only being carried out on those roads which, according to findings of the traffic service are considered popular speeding routes. These include Berthold-Beitz-Boulevard, Altendorfer Strasse, the B 224, Grillostrasse, Friedrich-Ebertstrasse, Bottroper Strasse and Wuppertaler Strasse.

49 of the busted rule breakers were traveling so fast that driving bans were checked. In addition, nine criminal charges were filed: six cases for driving without a license, one for drunk driving and one for forging documents after a fake driver’s license could be secured. Allegedly illegal street races were also prevented.

A municipal balance sheet shows where a particularly large number of speed offenders were caught in Essen within twelve months.
