The lifeless body of footballer Christian Atsu was found in the rubble of his residence, twelve days after the earthquakes which ravaged Turkey and Syria.
The sad news fell this Saturday, February 18. Footballer Christian Atsu has been found dead in the ruins of his building in Hatay, southern Turkey. The Ghanaian international, who played for the Hatay club, was one of more than 40,000 people who lost their lives in the earthquakes that devastated Turkey and Syria last February 6. It was Christian Atsu’s agent, Murat Uzunmehmet, who announced his death to the Turkish private agency DHA, said AFP. “Atsu’s lifeless body was found under the rubble. His belongings are still being removed. His phone was also found”said his agent.

Christian Atsu, who celebrated his 31st birthday on January 10, was born in Ada, Ghana. He began his career as a professional footballer by signing for FC Porto in 2011, club with which he won the title of Portuguese champion. He then signed, in 2013, a 5-year contract with Chelsea FC, but he will not play for the club. Indeed, he was immediately loaned to the Dutch club of Speed Arnhem. He will then go, still on loan, through Everton, Bournemouth, Málaga and finally Newcastle Unitedwho decided to hire him in 2017. At the same time, Christian Atsu had been called up to the Ghana national team in 2012. From his first selection, he stood out by scoring one of the 7 goals scored by his team against Lesotho.

After a stint at the club Al Raed Saudi FC for the 2021-2022 season, Christian Atsu signed with Hatayspor, the club from the city of Antakya in southeastern Turkey, which was devastated by the earthquake on February 6. The day before the disaster, he had scored his first goal of the season, allowing the club to win in extremis against Kasimpasa in the Süper Lig. His body was found in the rubble of the Rönesans residence, where he lived, along with hundreds of other people.
