DETROIT — Ford recalled nearly 1.9 models of its Explorer sport utility vehicle in the United States because a trim can fly off while driving and create a dangerous situation for other vehicles.
The call affected Explorer models between 2011 and 2019.
The pieces that hold the trim that covers the roof attachment next to the windshield in place can come loose, documents submitted Wednesday to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicated.
If this occurs, the piece may be thrown and increase the risk of a crash.
The call to workshops was made after regulatory authorities opened an investigation into the problem last January after receiving 164 consumer complaints. Canadian regulators were also analyzing the case.
At first, Ford was against the recall due to the low mass of the part, according to the documents. However, the automaker decided to organize it when US regulators determined that the problem posed a safety risk.
Ford said in a statement Wednesday that it expected just 5% of Explorers to be affected by that problem. The firm urged owners to contact their dealers for an inspection when parts are available.
The firm said in documents that it was aware of 568 consumer complaints and more than 14,000 warranty claims about missing or detached parts. Ford said he had no information about any crash or associated injury.
Dealers will check the trim to make sure the pieces are still attached and add adhesive to hold it in place.
Owners will be informed starting March 13.
