The EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has condemned the confirmation of the death penalty against the German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd by the Supreme Court in Iran “in the strongest terms”. In a statement released last night in Berlin, Borrell called on Tehran to overturn the verdict upheld on Wednesday.
Borrell called on Iran to refrain from all executions, to pursue a consistent policy of abolition of the death penalty and to strictly comply with its international obligations. Borrell also reiterated his “deep concern about the situation of EU nationals and dual nationals arbitrarily detained in Iran.”
