Former wild dumping grounds for rubbish keep popping up in the country. Back then filled up, the soil spits out the rubbish in many places.

“It was completely normal back then,” recalls a contemporary witness in an interview with VOL.AT. “I remember walking there as a girl with my dad and a trailer full of junk.”

Everyone disposed of their rubbish in the so-called “clay hole”. Everything was thrown into this hole. “There was no other option at the time. Trash cans and garbage cans were introduced later,” says the woman from Wolfurt.

Waste was disposed of in the Wolfurt industrial area in the 1970s.

The population disposed of their rubbish in the “mud hole”.

A walker noticed the gross littering.

Soil releases garbage

A sobering picture emerges from the VOL.AT local inspection. Where the disposal point used to be, all the rubbish is pushed up from the ground. “I often walk my dog here. Since last August, when there were so many floods in Vorarlberg and it rained so heavily, all the rubbish can be seen here,” says an attentive walker. He reported the case to the office of the Vorarlberg state government. The waste management department will take care of the matter. An employee of the state of Vorarlberg was also found on site by VOL.AT.

Packaging from days long gone comes to the fore.

Since the massive rainfall in August 2022, more and more rubbish has been coming out of the ground.

A lot of rubble can be seen.

Plastic in any form is also scattered over the area.

What happens to the forgotten landfill is currently still the subject of investigations. First things like ownership of the property, question of guilt and liability have to be clarified.
