An 80-year-old man from the Bregenz area fell victim to fraud.

Last Sunday evening he received a call from a man posing as a detective. The fraudster claimed that the man’s money was no longer safe in his bank and, through skillful interviewing, persuaded him to withdraw money several times and finally to hand over the money to an alleged police officer. The 80-year-old suffered damage of almost 40,000 euros.

Police safety instructions

The criminal police are now warning of this scam and are providing safety instructions. Dubious phone calls should be ended immediately and bank details or financial circumstances should never be revealed on the phone. If in doubt, the police should be called back on the known number. Talking to family members over the phone can also be helpful. The police will never ask for money or jewelry over the phone. Suspicious perceptions can be reported to any police station.
