Former Lizzo dancers who sued hope they have created a “movement”

The former Lizzo dancers who sued her alleging a hostile work environment and sexual harassment say abuse of background dancers is an industry-wide problem and they hope they are starting a movement to change it.

Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez, two of the three former dancers who filed the lawsuit, explained why they decided to take legal action in an interview with British television news channel Sky News on Monday afternoon.

“I think our main reason for presenting this is just to give people a voice and let them know that you can stand up for yourself and speak up, regardless of the caliber of the artist or the status that the person I’m speaking against may have,” Rodríguez said.

The women spoke days after Lizzo called the allegations in her lawsuit, which was first reported by NBC News, “false.”

“I usually choose not to respond to false accusations, but they are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous not to address,” Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, said on Instagram Thursday.

Rodriguez said that Lizzo was correct in characterizing the lawsuit’s claims as “outrageous” because what the dancers on her team experienced was precisely that.
