LOVELAND, Colo. – The Loveland Police Department (LPD) has released body camera video showing a former officer punching a woman in the face after she spit on him while in custody.

Loveland Police Chief Tim Doran released a video statement Friday to explain the decision to fire Officer Russell Maranto for unnecessary use of force.

The statement includes a brief snippet of body camera video, which shows the moments leading up to the Maranto coup and the aftermath. During that time, the woman, identified as Angelia Hall, 59, used explicit language and yelled at both officers and medical personnel. Hall spits at Maranto, who immediately reacts by punching her in the face.

The other officer present in the room quickly steps in to separate Hall and Maranto. While the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has investigated the incident, prosecutors have yet to file criminal charges against Maranto, Doran confirmed.

The Loveland Police Department reported that Maranto was fired on May 23 as a result of this incident.

According to the police report, officers responded to a report around 8:30 p.m. May 20 that a woman was wandering incoherently and crossing traffic in the area of North Garfield Avenue and East 29th Street. Upon arrival at the scene, officers took Hall into protective custody and transported her to a local hospital for evaluation.

Hall faces third-degree assault charges for his actions toward Maranto.
