Former presidents of the IDEA Group arrive in the Dominican Republic as electoral observers

SANTO DOMINGO.- The National Council of Private Enterprise (CONEP) will participate as an observer in the presidential and legislative elections next Sunday, May 19 and invited, through IDEA Groupto five former presidents of Latin America to join the mission.

The former presidents who make up the mission are Andres Pastrana (Colombia), Jamil Mahuad (Ecuador), Luis Lacalle (Uruguay), Jorge Quiroga (Bolivia), former governor Luis Fortuño (Puerto Rico) and Asdrúbal Aguiar, executive director of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA), details the press release.

The first meeting that the former presidents had was with the candidate and current president Luis Abinader, at the National Palace, where they arrived accompanied by their hosts, Celso Marranzini and César Dargam, president and executive vice president of the National Council of Private Enterprise.

The mission will complete an agenda that includes meetings with presidential candidates, the Central Electoral Board (JCE), the electoral attorney and a tour of voting centers in Greater Santo Domingo and Cibao on election day.

“From the beginning, CONEP has followed the electoral process and has offered its collaboration and support to the JCE, as in other processes,” said Cesar Dargam.

He also urged political leaders to be examples of civility and encourage their followers to contribute so that the process is carried out harmoniously and with full respect for the decision of the majority, which will be freely expressed at the polls.

The general elections will be held in the Dominican Republic this Sunday, May 19, where more than 8 million Dominicans are eligible to go to the polls.
