The honorees and their respective families / Municipality of La Plata

The echoes of the world championship obtained a few weeks ago by the Argentine National Team in the Middle East continue in every corner of the country, where the protagonists both on and off the pitch continue to receive affection and various tributes for what they have achieved on Qatari soil.

And yesterday it was the turn of the representatives of the City of La Plata, who were recognized by the Commune as “Illustrious Citizens”, in a ceremony full of pride that took place in the Mayor’s Office of the Municipal Palace.

There, for obvious reasons, the defender Juan Marcos Foyth could not be present nor the goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, who had to return to work at Villarreal in Spain.

In his place, Ariel Foyth, father of the defending world champion, and Adriana García, mother of the goalkeeper who, despite not having played minutes, was key in practice for Messi to convert the penalty kicked against Croatia, received the well-deserved distinctions.

Also recognized, with justice, were the physical trainers Luis Martín and Rodrigo Barrios, part of the world champion coaching staff that Lionel Scaloni knew how to command in a great way.

THE NEW ILLUSTRIOUS CITIZENS

Foyth was born in La Plata on January 12, 1998, he began his training at Estudiantes and in 2015 he was chosen as the outstanding player of the year at the traditional AFA youth soccer festival.

In 2016, he was part of the Reserve team, until he finally made his debut on March 19 in the First Division with a 1-0 win against Patronato. The following year the sale of him to Tottenham of the English Premier League was confirmed, and in 2020 he was loaned to Villarreal.

His history also includes the South American Under-20 tournament in Ecuador, the Frenz International Cup 2016 youth international tournament and the call to international friendlies in 2018, where he finally made his debut with the light blue and white.

For his part, Rulli was born on May 20, 1992 and also started in the lower ranks of Estudiantes. He made his debut in the Primera goal in 2013, at just 19 years old, and quickly achieved a club record: 588 minutes without scoring goals.

He was sold to Real Sociedad in 2014, where he stayed until 2019, when he went to Montpellier in France. In addition, he played in the 2016 Olympic Games and in a pandemic he was bought by Villarreal.

His great performances made Scaloni take him into account for the Qualifiers and he came to save a game: in the 1-1 against Ecuador, on March 30 of this year.
