Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is about to experience a new episode with French justice. This time, the Madrid native will not be in the dock. Indeed, affected by political defamation, the 2022 Golden Ball filed a complaint against the French activist, Damien Rieu.
Support of the very controversial Eric Zemmour, Damien Rieu had posted two tweets which questioned the relationship between Karim Benzema and a terrorist group suspected of being behind the assassination of Samuel Paty.
Indeed, the ex-spokesman of the far-right French political party, Rieu, had posted a photo of Karim Benzema with the imam of the Meaux mosque which had been searched after the death of Professor Paty. An “index of proximity to Benzema of this group” according to the words of Damien Rieu.
In addition, the latter criticized the Madrid striker for making the Chahada sign by raising his finger to the sky. “Another indication of the proximity of Benzema to armed jihadist groups” according to said Damien Rieu.
Finally, the French activist criticized Karim Benzema for having liked the post of the famous UFC champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who had called for “disfiguring Emmanuel Macron” for his position of defending the right to caricature.
Thus, following Benzema’s complaint, Rieu should be tried for political defamation and will appear before the 6th press chamber of the Lyon court on June 20.
