Each year, Lyon awards the Montluc Resistance and Freedom Prize to a French or foreign writer. In particular, for works which relate facts of Resistance or which constitute in themselves an act of resistance. For 2023, the Montluc Prize was awarded to an Algerian writer.

This year, five finalists have been selected for the Montluc Resistance and Freedoms literary prize. Five works compete for this prize, but only one book will be rewarded by the jury composed of personalities, artists, journalists and writers.

The five finalists are therefore: “In the bad wind” by Kaouther Adimi, “A man without a title” by the writer Xavier Le Clerc, “The colonel does not sleep” by Emilienne Malfatto. But also, “Consolée” by Beate Umubyeyi Mairess and “La princesse de Zanzibar” by Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin.

In Lyon, the Algerian writer Kaouther Adimi receives the Montluc Resistance and Freedom literary prize

In the premises of the former Montluc prison, where several figures of the Resistance in Lyon were interned, the Prix Montluc was awarded to the Algerian writer Kaouther Adimi. Indeed, on April 7, the young novelist Kaouther Adimi succeeded in winning this famous prize thanks to her novel “Au vent mal”.

By winning the 2023 Montluc Resistance and Freedom Prize, Kaouther Adimi succeeds Jean d’Amérique. As a reminder, “In the bad wind”, written by this young woman, is the fifth book appearing in her assets. It traces the story of three Algerians, from a village in eastern Algeria.

This book tells the touching story of Leila, married very young, against her will, but who decides to take her life in hand and separate from her husband. And go home to his parents with his child. In this book, Kaouther Adimi also recounts the destinies of Tarik, a shy shepherd, but also of Said who becomes a man of letters.

Kaouther Adimi, winner of several awards

Writer and screenwriter of Algerian origin, Kaouther Adimi is the author of several successful books and new plays and screenplays. In these novels, the novelist tells the life of fictional characters inspired by real life in Algeria.

Among his books which have been awarded, “Nos Richesses” published in 2017 which won the Renaudot Prize for high school students. His fourth novel “Les petits de Septembre” won him the Prix du Roman Métis for high school students. Kaouther Adimi is also the winner of the Student Novels Prize, thanks to her novel “Au vent mal”, which was awarded to her by France Culture.
