Netflix is not in its best shape. In the first half of 2022, the streaming platform lost one million subscribers. After a difficult year, its founder is leaving the operational management on January 20. It now specifies when this new policy, highly criticized of course, will come into force.
Paying Netflix account sharing very soon
Free Netflix account sharing is almost over. Last year, the streaming giant announced that it wanted to put an end to this practice, which costs it millions of dollars a year. The American firm estimates that 100 million households have access to its catalog without paying a penny. In the coming weeks, the functionality will therefore become payable. Netflix announced today that account sharing will be charged a handful of euros by the end of the first quarter of this year, i.e. March 31, 2023 at the latest.
The solution envisaged by the platform is therefore to charge three euros for each sub-account created from a subscription whose IP address would be located outside the main household. For the company, this shortfall compromises its ” long-term ability to invest in and improve Netflix. Greg Peters, the firm’s new co-chief executive, knows that ” not going to be a universally popular decision but he believes it is necessary. It therefore expects that the implementation of this device will create a new drain of users but the company is optimistic that a growing commitment will be restored over time as during the trials in Latin America.

It seems difficult for Netflix to track the IP address of different households via mobile devices such as tablets, laptops or smartphones.
