French ballet choreographer Pierre Lacotte has died at the age of 91. His wife Ghislaine Thesmar said he succumbed to the consequences of an infection today. Among other things, Lacotte was known for bringing back 19th-century ballets to the world’s great stages.

Born near Paris on April 4, 1932, Lacotte attended the ballet school of the Paris Opera from 1942, despite poor health, where he later also worked as a dancer. After that he also worked as a choreographer.

Lacotte brought plays from the 19th century back to the stages of the Vienna State Opera, the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and the Paris Opera, among others. “He loved opera, it was his only home,” said Thesmar, to whom Lacotte had been married since 1968.
