The Basque, of 27 years, studied Engineering and works as an electronic engineer in the company Sapa. This Sunday, on vacation, she was the great revelation of the Spanish Championship having been close to the medals, although he was finally fifth.
“I really prepared the time trial conscientiously. But I don’t know if it was because of the heat or why on Friday at no time did I enjoy the ‘goat'”, told BRAND this Sunday on the way home in the van, along with the rest of the family.
Where things did work out for him was on the road. “Of course it was a surprise. I knew it would come in handy but to be up there, only surpassed by four World Tour riders, is something that stands out. I’m very happy”explains someone who turned to cycling during the pandemic.
“I have always been to do a lot of sports, but mine has been basketball until I was 24 years old. I played in the Tolosa team (Tolosa Adiskideok Kirol Elkartea, better known as TAKE), in my town, just in the category prior to the EBA. I have also always run to keep him in shape, but before the pandemic, with my first salary, I bought a bike for 500 euros, an iron, and I was hooked,” says the Basque, who did not stop getting on the roller during confinement .

It is a very modest African team, the most in its category, but it operates as if it were Portuguese due to the good relationship between the two countries. We do the Portuguese calendar and also some races in Spain”, adds someone who has the Agostinho Trophy, Ordizia, Getxo and Portugal in mind on his roadmap. There he wants to perform as in the escorial.
Fifth place this Sunday encourages him to keep going. A ranking that he has achieved in strange conditions: “I work in the mornings in the company and in the afternoon I train. It is not easy in winter. Then I take advantage of vacation days to be able to compete.” Perhaps now he will receive offers that he is “willing to listen” to dedicate himself “one hundred percent” to his new passion.
For Gorka, a fan of Van Aert, everything you are living is a dream. “At first, and I’m sure many thought about it on Sunday, they said to me ‘but where did you come from?’.
