January 1, 2023 is the time when the country experiences significant changes in its organization. What should we remember for this beginning of the year?

Happy New Year and good health ! January 1, 2023 is here and, like every year, this date is the marker of many changes in France. In tech, in transport, in energy, in the environment, in administration, in public services and in pop-culture. Here are the main developments to know for this month of January.

The landline number can be kept anywhere in France

Geographic portability of landline numbers is ensured. This means that you can keep the telephone number for your region (like 01 if you live in Île-de-France) even if you move to Brittany, Corsica or the North. This rule now only works for the metropolis. Not for overseas France.

Google Stadia is shutting down

It’s not exactly January 1 that Google Stadia shuts down, but January 18. A few days of respite for the players to continue their game. For those affected, a refund policy exists. According to the publishers, it is possible to transfer your video games off the streaming platform.

A red e-letter replaces the red stamp, which disappears

The red stamp disappears. It is replaced by a “red e-letter”. This digital missive turns out to be a kind of electronic mail that is typed on the La Poste website. The postal service then takes care of printing it in the post office closest to your recipient. The document is put in an envelope, then distributed in the mailbox of your correspondent.

Commercial canvassing by telephone will no longer be able to use numbers in 06 and 07

The telephone numbers in 06 and 07, which are reserved for mobile communications, can no longer be used for commercial canvassing. From now on, they will be reserved exclusively for individuals. Canvassing by telephone can still be done, but from other numbers (such as 09). Ditto for ephemeral connections (contact with a delivery person or a VTC).

End of extended support for Windows 8.1

On January 10, 2023, Windows 8.1 will no longer be entitled to any free patches from Microsoft. The American publisher turns the page on the operating system. If you are still with this OS, it’s time to turn to a more recent Windows or to look at the side of the competition, like Linux or Mac. If you stick with Windows 8.1, you’ll be on your own.

A zero-interest loan is set up to help purchase an electric car (or any other vehicle with very low polluting emissions). However, this loan is only accessible under conditions. You have to be an individual (or a legal person with a micro-enterprise), live near certain big cities and have limited resources.

This amount was 7,000 euros in 2022 for low-income households. This ecological bonus was already set to decline in July 2022, but the government wanted to extend it by six months with the same amount.

Increase in the monthly rate of the Navigo pass

the pass Navigo sees its monthly subscription increase by 12% in 2023. It goes from 75.20 euros, price unchanged since January 2017, to 84.10 euros. This development is justified by the rise in energy prices and inflation. The Navigo pass is a transport card intended for people working or residing in Île-de-France. It gives access to the RATP and SNCF networks, among others.

First 25 euros during the first carpool, then 75 euros during the tenth. The measure only targets first-time drivers who have never carpooled before.

End of the discount at the pump for fuels

The discount on fuel prices will end on January 1. The State offered a rebate of 10 cents per liter at the pump (sometimes with additional reductions in certain networks, such as Total). Instead, a fuel allowance arrives, which is 100 euros. It is aimed at the most modest French people. 10 million people should benefit from it.

Male chicks will no longer be killed

Each year, 50 million male chicks were eliminated in the egg chain. By grinding. This abominable practice ends on January 1, 2023. This does not mean that these animals will not be killed — breeding for their flesh is envisaged, among others. However, their destruction will no longer occur at birth.

Condoms become free for those under 26

To limit the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, such as AIDS, hepatitis B and C, herpes or syphilis, a new public hygiene measure is coming: free condoms for people under 26. The measure is in addition to other measures already in place, such as free contraception for young women up to 25 years old.

Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video make way for new films and series

Every month, the major subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms renew their catalog with new content. This is crucial to keep their customers and avoid an exodus to the competition. This is true for Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Netflix, among others.

A reform on the taxation of capital gains on cryptocurrencies comes into force

Depending on whether you are a private seller or a professional, things move in the taxation of capital gains on cryptocurrencies. For individuals, these capital gains are taxed at 12.8% excluding social security contributions, regardless of the frequency of transactions. They can nevertheless give it up to apply instead the progressive scale of the tax… if it is interesting.
