The average diesel price in France fell by 1 cent last week, bringing it back to its level of January 2022.

The price of diesel was still trending down last week. On average in France, the most consumed fuel was displayed at 1.6555 euros per liter, down 1 cent compared to the previous week, according to the statement of the Ministry of Energy Transition stopped on Friday, May 12.

For its part, unleaded 95-E10 lost 1.8 cents, to end up at 1.8223 euros per liter, still on a national average. What narrow the gap with diesel a little, while the price difference between the two fuels had reached a level last week unseen since June 2016.

Return to January 2022 price

We have to go back to January 2022, just before the start of the war in Ukraine, to find this level of diesel price.

In September, still last year, diesel had come down to a floor price of 1.659 euros per liter. But, over this period, fuels benefited from a state discount of 30 cents per liter, which was combined with that of 20 cents from Totalenergies.

Fuel prices remain at relatively high levels in France compared to our main neighbours, as shown by a survey by BFM Business in early May.

According to the consumer association CLCV, the “distribution transport” gross margin has gone from 15 to 25 cents since the start of the year.

The Minister of Energy Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher for her part reiterated her calls to distributors for fuel prices to “fall faster”, and reflect “as closely as possible” the decline in international oil prices.
