Down 5 cents last week, the average price of diesel fell below that of gasoline. A first since June 2022.

A return to normal in sight at French service stations? Declining last week, the average price of diesel in France fell below that of gasoline, a first since June 2022, indicates the latest statement from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, stopped on Friday February 3.

In detail, the average price of diesel in France fell by 5.6 cents, for a price at the pump of 1.8873 euros per liter. For its part, unleaded 95-E10 fell by 1.1 cents, for an average price of 1.8996 euros per litre.

A drop just before the embargo on Russian diesel

As we can see on our graph showing the evolution of the two main fuels consumed in France, it is the first time since June 10, 2022 that the average price of diesel is at a lower price than that of gasoline, which is normally the case.

The price of oil also continued to fall last week, with a barrel of Brent from the North Sea at 83.2 dollars, down 3 dollars compared to the previous week.

Difficult to know if this return to a diesel cheaper than gasoline will last over time. The European embargo on Russian diesel has been in effect since Sunday 5 February. However, the sector had anticipated this situation to find new sources of supply. Suppliers from the Gulf countries in particular, with a more expensive diesel price than that from Russia, which recently justified the fact that gasoline, largely refined in France, found itself at a lower price at the pump.
