After days of long lines to get fuel, the supply crisis increased dramatically in Cuba and forced the authorities to suspend activities and ration the sale of fuel.

The universities of the provinces of Villa Clara, Agraria de La Habana, Holguín and Sancti Spíritus decided that starting Monday classes will be online, reported the study houses. The students had to return to their lessons after a week of annual educational recess.

Throughout these months of economic crisis, the island suffered an intermittent shortage of all kinds of goods, including fuel, but the cancellation of activities for this reason had never been reported.

The educational institutions explained that the measure is due to “fuel limitations” or the lack of “availability” of fuel.

Meanwhile, the authorities of Villa Clara, in the center of the country, indicated in a statement published in local press outlets and the government’s Facebook page that fuel will only be sold to drivers of private cars licensed to operate as public carriers and basic services -ambulances, burial or emergency services-.

On Sunday, a concert by the Cuban National Symphony in the capital’s main theater was also canceled due to lack of fuel.

Since last week there have been long lines at the filling stations. The authorities recognized that the crisis will not have an immediate solution.

  • 500 or 600 tons of gasoline are used daily in Cuba, of which only about 400 have been dispatched.
  • 40 liters is the limit sale set in Havana for each vehicle since last week.
