news culture Game of Thrones: this ultra rude episode that the children could see at breakfast time

A small broadcast error led to an unusual incident in the UK. Early in the morning, viewers were able to stumble upon a rather crude episode of Game of Thrones. A technical problem with which we do not laugh at our friends across the Channel.

On August 19, at wake-up time, the youngest British viewers started the day in a funny way. Sky Atlantic was broadcasting an episode of Game of Thrones. Between sex sequences, bloody fights and flowery language, the television adaptation of George RR Martin’s novel does not really have a place with the youngest audience.

The episode in question The Prince of Winterfell (season 2 episode 8) is not necessarily the most shocking of the HBO series, but it still contains many coarse terms. With Tyrion, Varys and Theon headlining, but also Jon Snow, Ygritte and the wildlings, there’s nothing surprising. And the incident remains a real problem for the authorities responsible for television programming across the Channel.

“An undetected technical error”

In the UK, prime time is strictly regulated. The program was not only broadcast at the wrong time, but moreover in the clear. Usually in the UK you have to enter a pin code to be able to access such programs if they are broadcast before 9pm. This time, unfortunately for the less vigilant parents, the series was not protected.

Sky Atlantic has therefore been pinned down by Ofcomthe regulatory body in charge of British television (the British equivalent of the French CSA, in a way), which evokes a “undetected technical error” before adding that “measures have been put in place to prevent the problem from happening again”.

For its part, Sky immediately apologized, stating that “it is never our intention to offend or upset our audience.” The operator “fully accepts that this type of content will not be released before 9 p.m. without the mandatory and necessary PIN protection.”
