According to Collider it is now clear that George Clooney will direct Showtime’s new spy series, The Department, which is based on the successful French drama series Le Bureau des Legendes. Clooney will act as both director and producer and the series will follow the same storyline as the original French series, which involves the daily life and work of the French security service. Here, the “Bureau of Legends” is responsible for the training and management of secret agents on duty.

According to Paramount and Showtime CEO Chris McCarthy, the series will follow in Homeland’s footsteps. In his own words:

“Just as Homeland elevated global espionage to new heights, The Department will take viewers even deeper into a world of intrigue and subterfuge with complicated characters who struggle with their own demons as they fight existential threats to the nation and the world.”

This will be Clooney’s ninth time in the director’s chair since his 2002 debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

Sometime later this year, The Department goes into production. No premiere date is known at the time of writing.
