George Washington Parkway northbound lanes reopen

The northbound lane of the George Washington Memorial Parkway reopened Tuesday afternoon after being closed since falling trees on Saturday clogged the tracks.

The southbound lane remains closed between the Capital Beltway and Spout Run Parkway, but the NPS said it should reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews have been working to clear downed trees and dangerous limbs on and near the road and trails along the parkway.

“If there are no downed trees in those areas, blocking the roads, there could be broken branches that pose a risk not only to travelers but also to some of our people who enjoy our parks,” said Christopher Hershey of the NPS.

The agency also said it had to call in additional crews to help with the cleanup.

“Yesterday, crews removed between 250 and 325 hazardous trees, resulting in 100 dump trucks and 15 chipper trucks, and more than 500 tons of wood and debris,” George Washington Memorial Parkway Superintendent Charles Cuvelier said in a statement. communicated on Tuesday afternoon.
