Tbilisi, May 17. The State Security Service (SSE) of Georgia reported today the arrest of six members of the terrorist organization Islamic State who were planning a series of attacks in several countries.

“The SSE Anti-Terrorism Center together with the Ministry of the Interior and the General Prosecutor’s Office launched an operation in which six Georgian citizens suspected of having contacts with one of the leaders of the Islamic State were arrested,” the Security agency said in a statement.

According to the SSE, the detainees “planned various terrorist actions in several countries”, which were informed of the group’s purposes, from which weapons and explosives were seized.

A criminal case was instituted against the detainees for alleged belonging to a terrorist organization, a crime that in Georgia is punishable by up to 17 years in prison.

Last April, the SSE detained the Georgian citizen Maljaz Paksashvili, who fought in Syria between 2013 and 2015 and was the leader of a group closely linked to the Islamic State leadership. EFE
