The idea underlying the Élysée Treaty, signed by Germany and France in 1963, was visionary. Because not only political cooperation was agreed, but further thought: Aware of how difficult it would be for older generations to overcome the reservations cemented by the fresh memories of two world wars, the focus was on youth exchanges. The hope for lasting peace was seen in the unbiased view of young people on the other country.

And the hope came true. The arch-enmity between the neighbors, which had lasted for centuries, was overcome within a few decades and turned into a close partnership. For the generations who, like mine, subsequently enjoyed student exchanges and study visits, the idea that there could be a war between Germany and France is simply grotesque.

The value of this historic reconciliation is not diminished by occasional political upheavals or friendly agreements with other countries. With the Élysée Treaty, Germany and France did not enter into a marriage with a claim to exclusivity, they sealed a partnership – and filled it with life over the decades.

Today, the Franco-German tandem can no longer be viewed through the lens of the post-war period; it stands in the context of modern Europe. Strong ties between all EU partners are a prerequisite for European unity and sovereignty.

The fact that France has concluded friendship agreements with its neighbors Spain and Italy should therefore not be viewed with envy from Germany. Rather, there should be reason to think about how Germany can further develop relations with its other neighbors.

Instead of breaking out into prophecies of doom about the declining number of German school children learning French, German politicians should consider which other languages are important in Germany today and how their learning can be promoted.

That doesn’t mean that the Franco-German partnership has lost its importance. Europe needs Germany and France as strong engines to develop further. It is regrettable that there have only been a few joint initiatives in recent years and this trend must not continue. We must not take the relationship for granted and neglect to nurture it. The creators of the Élysée Treaty laid a solid foundation. Filling them with life is left to each generation anew.
