The fee service, formerly GEZ, is currently comparing its data with that of the residents’ registration offices. That’s why many contributors are currently getting mail that shouldn’t be ignored.

Since November 2022, a registration data comparison has been running at the contribution service of the public broadcasters. The administrative community receives selected data from the registration offices on adult citizens in Germany.

These are compared with the more than 46 million contribution accounts of the contributors in order to determine how many contributors there are actually.

Anyone who is not assigned to an apartment will be sent by post from January 10, 2023 contacted. But it can take until the end of June 2023 before everyone gets mail – you should not ignore this letter.

Reply online and done

This registration data comparison is regulated in the Interstate Broadcasting Treaty and is now taking place for the third time. You should respond to the letter within two weeks and fill in the requested apartment details.

Of course, it’s faster online rundfunkbeitrag.de/meldedaten. If you report that a contribution has already been paid for the apartment, then state the contribution number – this is listed in every letter from the person paying. After that, your data will be deleted immediately.

That’s what happens when you ignore it

When comparing registration data, the following information is transmitted by the residents’ registration offices:

  • family name
  • First names under designation of the first name
  • former name
  • PhD degree
  • Marital status
  • day of birth
  • Current and last address of main and secondary residences, including all available information on the location of the residence
  • day of moving into the apartment

If you ignore the letter from “GEZ”, there will be a reminder. If this is not answered either, then you will be automatically registered, since the broadcasting service assumes that a contribution has to be paid for the apartment.

This can then also happen retrospectively to the date of moving into the apartment. This can be enforced until January 1, 2020, so that there is a risk of heavy additional payments.
