A giant spider and a first-ever Klimt painting could fetch high prices at New York’s spring auction in May.
“Island in the Attersee” by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) could fetch around 45 million dollars (about 40.8 million euros) at auction, the auction house Sotheby’s announced. Louise Bourgeois’ spider sculpture could fetch up to $40 million at auction, sources said.
The Klimt painting was created at the beginning of the 20th century. The approximately three meter high giant spider by the French-American artist Bourgeois (1911-2010) was created in 1996. Many of these spiders are in important collections and museums worldwide, but it is only the fourth that has ever been auctioned.
