Google announced today that its Gmail email service will start showing blue checkmarks next to the sender’s name to help users verify the identity of mail senders.

In a blog post, the company said the new feature, which leverages Gmail’s Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI), will require businesses to authenticate that the brand logo they use as their messaging avatar actually belongs to them.

The blue verified checkmark will automatically be assigned to companies that have already adopted BIMI and it will indicate that the sender of the email has verified that they own the domain and profile picture they are using to send the message. . This feature will help users quickly identify legitimate senders, especially if they don’t know what a BIMI-approved logo included in an email means.

Google says email authentication can help users and security systems “identify and stop spam”, while allowing senders to “leverage their brand trust”. This feature is rolling out starting today to Workspace accounts and personal Google accounts.
