The series points stayed in Karis when BK-46 and Helsinki IFK clashed in the handball league on Saturday afternoon. The high-scoring match was still even in the final minutes.

The final score in the match was 37–33 (20-18).

The match, which was the first in the upper end series, offered a lot of goals, many post shots, tension, non-existent defensive play and a lot of whining at the referees.

It almost looked as if the teams, at least in the first half, followed a script where HIFK mostly invested in long attacks, while BK-46 struck with quick counterattacks.

Messy match in many ways

HIFK’s team captain Oscar Udd was not particularly disappointed even though his team lost.

– We are fighting very well today, he says and is a little upset that his team is not getting the ball in the final minutes.

During certain sequences in the first half, BK pulled away, but the visitors quickly caught up again. The second half of the match was very even and exciting. The match decision was largely the merit of BK captain Jac Karlsson. He freed Jonathan Roos for the goal that gave BK the lead 34–33.

Karlsson then made sure his team took the lead 36–33 with 45 seconds left to play. He was also named the best player of the match.

– It was messy and it wasn’t pretty, but we took those two series points that we should have. We concede too many goals today, says Karlsson.

Chat with the judges

In several replays during the match, Karlsson had something to say to referee Krister Illman, who made a comeback in the FM league in Kari’s sports hall.

– You try to do everything to win the match. Everyone always disagrees with the verdicts regardless of how the judges rule. I try to have good communication with the referees, but sometimes it derails, says Karlsson with a small smile on his face.

Oscar Udd also has an opinion about the judges:

– They are equally bad in both directions. But our loss has nothing to do with them. It is small margins that decide today.

The half-time talk in HIFK’s dressing room focused on one thing: To calm the team down.

– We were all excited about everything, teammates, referees, audience and “the whole hoito”. We do that very well. We focus on the right things in the second half and therefore we are in the whole match today, says Udd.

BK-46 came to the match without top scorer Nico Rönnberg, who is sidelined with a back injury. The Kari team’s coach Andreas Rönnberg states that other players now had to take responsibility for the goal shooting.

– I am very happy that other players now take responsibility and score the goals, says Rönnberg.

Igor Skypa received a red card

Sebastian Säkkinen was sharpest forward in the home team. Oliver Nordlund had occasional glimpses and team captain Jac Karlsson played solidly. In the second half, Jonathan Roos stepped forward from his left flank and scored some important finishes.

Igor Skypa picked up three sending offs and received a red card midway through the second half.

In HIFK, goalkeeper Bogdan Klepa managed to make some nice saves despite the constantly leaking defence. Clear one ahead was the slippery Portuguese Rui Rolo who scored eleven goals. Victor Grönmark also had a good match. Oscar Udd fought exemplary.
