In a post on Xbox Wire tells Microsoft and Rare that a slightly modernized version of the shooter classic Goldeneye 007 will be released this coming Friday, January 27.

It was last year that we first learned that the game was on its way to modern platforms.

Online play only on Switch

The game comes to Xbox and Nintendo Switch, in two slightly different versions – and as we wrote about last year, some quirky choices have been made here.

As part of the announcement, those involved have released two new trailers, one for each platform. You can see them on the right.

The Nintendo Switch version will be released as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription service. The service gives users access to a library of older games, and Goldeneye cannot therefore be purchased outside the service.

The Switch version is the only one with online play for up to four players, and is basically the same game as when it was released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997.

The Xbox version, on the other hand, supports 4K resolution and widescreen format, and has alternave controls.

Like everything else on Xbox, you also get “achievements” that you can collect. On Xbox, the game is released as part of Game Pass, and is also included as a free add-on for those who own the Rare Replay bundle. Here you can only play multiplayer locally on one screen.

The launch marks the end of years of rumors of a revamp or new version of Goldeneye. It was known for a long time that Rare and Microsoft long ago sniffed at giving Goldeneye a new life, but that rights problems stood in the way of the plans. In fact, a playable version of Goldeneye apparently intended for the Xbox 360 leaked online a couple of years ago.
