Apple has rolled out iOS 16.3.1 which includes several fixes and optimizations. In particular, the accident detection functionality has been improved to prevent the triggering of false alarms. Other fixes have also been deployed in order to resolve the iCloud bug and the “Find My” request problem with Siri. On the other hand, this update had a detrimental effect on Google Photos which became unresponsive.

iOS 16.3.1 broke Google Photos

If you’ve downloaded iOS 16.3.1 and are using Google’s storage service for your snaps, you might be in for a nasty surprise. The update causes Google Photos to crash. After you upgrade your system to iOS 16.3.1, Google Photos may stop opening and crash instantly. This user reveals the problem in image:

Note that the problem is not universal. Some users claim to be able to open Google Photos no problem despite the update. The crash is still relatively widespread. Other Google apps, like Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Maps, all seem to work fine.

If you haven’t downloaded the update yet and you are a Google Photos user, it is advisable to leave this new iteration aside for the moment. The Mountain View giant is hard at work to correct the malfunction. Google is aware of the problem and is “in the process of rolling out a fix in version 6.23.1 of the Google Photos app”assures The Verge Michael Marconi, spokesperson for the company.

As a reminder, Google Photos had benefited from a major overhaul last September. A few days later, users were scared to death when they found that their photos had been corrupted.
