If Google intends to attract many new customers with the Pixel 7a presented at I/O 2023, its real problem is rather the loyalty of its past customers: very many of them want to change their smartphone brand.

Last week, Google I/O gave us some food for thought, especially with these 9 AI features that will change your life. The American giant also unveiled its next smartphone, the Pixel 7a (here’s where to buy it at the best price) and the Pixel Fold, for which Google takes back your iPhone for a fortune if you buy it.

With these two devices, the technological giant wants to nibble a little more share from Apple and Samsung, which dominate the smartphone market. Only, if the two Pixels could well attract new customers, the results of a new study suggest that the real battle for Google would rather be to retain those already conquered.

The Google Pixel isn’t getting customer loyalty

This study conducted by Statista among American consumers shows that owners of a Google Pixel are much more inclined to change brands than those of Samsung or Apple smartphones.

When asked if they were likely to switch smartphone brands at the next opportunity, more than half (57%) of Google Pixel owners surveyed said it was likely or very likely.

Apple, the king of high-tech customer loyalty, got the opposite result: 49% of its users said they were unlikely or very unlikely to switch brands. Samsung cannot claim such a result, however 44% of its users said they were unlikely or very unlikely to switch brands in the future.

Why are Google Pixel owners disappointed?

These statistics are not surprising. Older Pixel models, like the Pixel 4 and Pixel, are no longer supported for updates. Meanwhile, Samsung prefers to extend the duration of software support for its smartphones released at the same time.

Additionally, Google phones are notorious for random software bugs that can have serious consequences. This was especially the case with the Pixel 6, which had experienced major heat management and connectivity problems, with multiple bugs during updates.

Google has been able to partially address these issues in the latest generation of Pixels, but the numbers likely don’t yet reflect these efforts on the part of the manufacturer.
