The costs for citizens by 2045 for the purchase and installation of heat pumps should be around 130 million euros. This is what Robert Habeck says in the draft law of the Ministry of Economics, which his State Secretary Patrick Graichen played a key role in drafting. FDP energy expert Michael Kruse, on the other hand, estimates this at 620 billion euros, around five times as much.

Did Habeck’s ministry intentionally lower the numbers to keep the protests low? At the request of “BildA spokeswoman for the Ministry of Economic Affairs referred to the draft law. She did not provide a basis for calculating the numbers.

However, she tried to explain that the law states the additional costs that citizens would incur, not the total costs. “That means for the individual case, if a gas heating system that costs 10,000 euros had previously been installed, but now a heat pump that costs 30,000 euros, the costs for the individual are 20,000 euros.” The investment costs would come from the economic feasibility report of the ministry.

FDP expert worried: “The numbers in the heating law are unsound”

However, FDP expert Kruse also calculated these additional costs and calculated other, significantly higher numbers. Almost ten million houses and apartments are currently heated with oil and almost 20 million buildings with gas. Both types of heating should be history by 2045.

His conclusion: “The numbers in the heating law are unsound. The law has to go back to the assembly hall.” From his point of view, it is “worrying that the Ministry of Economics is getting involved in more and more contradictions with its own figures.”

His parliamentary colleague Christoph Meyer is also putting pressure on him. Habeck and Graichen would now have to “put the true numbers for the law on the table,” he told “Bild”. “Whether 100 billion or 600 billion euros is a huge difference.” He called for cost transparency to enable meaningful consultations in the Bundestag.
