Next Wednesday the Handball World Championship starts in Sweden and Poland. While the DHB team is still preparing with two friendlies against Iceland on Saturday and Monday, the TV stations are also planning their coverage of the tournament.

The ARD has now announced in a press release that there will be a change compared to the European and World Championships of recent years. Otherwise, the former handball professional Alexander Bommes regularly helped to shape the program. At the EM 2012 and the World Cup 2013 as an interviewer, then also as a moderator. Together with ex-professional Dominik Klein, he classified the games.

Alex Bommes is out due to health problems

At this year’s tournament, moderator Stephanie Müller-Spirra will take over the role of Bommes alongside Klein, although Bommes was originally scheduled to do so. However, the 46-year-old canceled due to health reasons.

“After a year in which I, like many people, had to accept some health restrictions, I want to complete my recovery and therefore refrain from moderating this year’s Handball World Championship. Dominik Klein is in competent and friendly hands with Stephanie – and I’m very happy about that,” the moderator said in a press release from ARD.

Bommes had already canceled the World Cup in Qatar at short notice due to health problems. At that time, Jessy Wellmer took over his moderation task. It is not known exactly what health problems Bommes has.

Handball is not new territory for Bommes’ replacement Müller-Spirra. The MDR presenter has already dealt with the sport as part of the film “Aus der Cover”, which is about the coming out of handball player Lucas Krzikalla.

“Of course I’m very curious about everything that’s to come! Replacing Alex Bommes is a huge task, but I’ll give it my all – together with Dominik Klein. Above all, I hope that Alex himself will soon be healthy and happy in front of the camera again can.”

Florian Naß, who has also been at the microphone at major handball events for several years, will be on site as a reporter for ARD.
