“We will comply with the decision of the Court,” declared Harvard, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, while claiming that the university community should be made up of “people of diverse origins.”
For this reason, he announced that during the coming months he will determine “how to preserve the essential values” of the institution, while complying with the new jurisprudence of the Supreme Court.
In a brief statement, UNC also announced that it will comply with the law, but vindicated the importance of “serving students of all backgrounds, beliefs, income levels, and life experiences.”
The conservative majority of the court sided with the students who denounced Harvard and the University of North Carolina, two of the longest-running in the country, because they believe that their admissions processes favor African-Americans and Hispanics to the detriment of whites and blacks. asians.
Affirmative action gained particular prominence in the country during the African-American civil rights movement and the end of racial segregation in schools in the 1950s.
The Supreme Court had protected since 1978 the right of universities to consider race as a factor in the admissions process.
