The condition of women and the fate of women in the world have always preoccupied associations for the defense of human rights. Indeed, between discrimination, domestic violence and feminicide, women have always led their fight to exist.

This is a thought and an observation that was also shared by the Franco-Algerian singer Souad Massi, who confided in an interview with the newspaper Le Monde. Indeed, the singer looks back on her childhood in Algeria, which was dominated by the male sex.

“I would not have arrived there if I had not been born in Bab El-oued”, Souad Massi

Known for her warm and melodious voice, the Franco-Algerian Souad Massi has sung a lot about exile and nostalgia. Through her songs, she defends freedom, singing for “women who have no crowns”. Child of a popular district of Algiers, Souad Massi returned to his childhood in Bab El-Oued “surrounded by women as fascinating as they are invisible”.

Indeed, the singer of “Raoui” thinks that when she was still a child, the rules were made for men and for their sole benefit. The one who shared this observation considers that the destiny of women was played at birth, they were “simply birds in a cage”, without education or public life.

Souad Massi still remembers the sadness and melancholy that emanated from the eyes of the women around her, women she found to be as magnificent as they were talented.

Souad Massi: “women must fight to exist”

As a child, the singer who is now 50 years old, was rocked by her grandmother who taught her maturity. However, to stand up to this society, Souad Massi decided to become a tomboy to enjoy freedom, because a free woman did not exist back then.

Indeed, before embarking on music, Souad Massi did three hours of sports a day to become a tomboy, sporty and muscular who could defend himself. By discovering her talent, the singer made music her escape, a way to live her freedom.

Moreover, engaging in music was also a challenge for this woman, because playing an instrument was frowned upon by society, especially in front of men. It was thanks to his brother that Souad obtained his first registration for a guitar lesson, as a birthday present.

Souad Massi herself experienced a family tragedy, in particular because of her ex-husband who tried to murder their daughters. Moreover, she did not hesitate to speak of men, who were themselves trapped, and who are, according to her words, “prisoners of a doctrine”.
