Do you always go on holiday with full safety equipment?

at “Alarm for Cobra 11” star Erdogan Atalay (56) is quite normal. When the actor is out and about with his children Maris (10) and Amira (20), he always has an extra bag with him. Includes: a long rope, a rappel harness, snap hooks, flashlights, a first aid kit, gloves and more.

“I just have a little quirk,” says the actor to BILD am SONNTAG. “When I’m out and about with the family, I always take a climbing harness with me so that I can abseil the children if the worst comes to the worst. I have dealt with fire so often through my job. I know how fast the flames and smoke can spread and how hot it gets. I want to be prepared just in case.”

“Alarm for Cobra 11” returns every Tuesday (8:15 p.m., RTL) with three feature films. “It’s going to be a little funnier and not quite so serious anymore”

If he checks into a hotel, everything goes according to plan. First the escape plans are checked. “The first thing I do in the room is see where the window is, how to open it and where to tie the rope. When you can’t open the windows, I hate it like the plague. But you can use it in an emergency.”

In high floors wants Erdogan Atalay not staying overnight with his family. “The rope is 30 meters long, so there are quite a few floors. But I don’t have to be able to abseil the children down to the ground. The next floor is often enough. Then I can swing it in.”

Fortunately, the actor’s equipment has never been used in an emergency before. He’s had it with him for 20 years. “Ever since I had my daughter Amira, I’ve been doing it this way. I can climb, but I can’t climb and hold her. At first I had another way of strapping it to my back. But abseiling is just safer.”

It all sounds pretty adventurous and complex. But what do those for whose safety Erdogan Atalay is so worried actually say?

“My family is annoyed and thinks I’m crazy,” says the actor, laughing. “We always have an extra bag with us when we are out and about. Even when traveling by plane. But then you take a little less with you.”
