Coffee in the morning drives away sorrow and worry? Strictly speaking, the caffeinated drink in the morning is not healthy, according to a study.

It is part of everyday life for countless people around the world: a hot cup of coffee in the morning. It warms you up in the ice-cold morning hours, tastes good, relieves tiredness and provides energy. So the perfect start to the day? At least not according to one study.

As part of a study, scientists at the University of Bath have analyzed the effects of the coffee consumption researched, more precisely: the consumption of coffee on an empty stomach. The result should give lovers of the hot drink food for thought.

Coffee: How it affects blood sugar

29 healthy men and women took part in the experiment to research blood sugar regulation. Three scenarios were run on three consecutive nights to determine whether coffee consumption increased empty stomach affects metabolism.






That’s what they became blood glucose levels of the subjects was measured after an undisturbed night of sleep. In addition, measurements were taken on a further two nights, during which the subjects were, however, awakened every hour.


As the researchers in the scientific journal “British Journal of Nutritionwrite, according to the experiment, a cup of coffee with about 300 milligrams of caffeine is enough to rise of producing blood sugar. Interesting: After the restless nights, the increase was particularly strong.

Caffeine in the morning: health consequences

Although a high blood sugar level initially seems harmless, the study sheds light on a possible long-term consequence of the regular increase: the metabolic disease Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that coffee in the morning has to be taboo: If you don’t have your coffee until after breakfast Eating too much can help prevent high blood sugar levels, the study found.
