Hearing to discuss possible increase in water service

The city’s Water Board held a hearing last night to discuss growing concerns about a possible increase in water supply rates.

The meeting was held in Staten Island.

The proposal calls for an 8.5% service increase for all residents.

This would mean almost $100 more per year for the average homeowner.

Some New Yorkers believe that the increase would affect them: “The rent is very expensive, plus the water that rises, things are going to be difficult for us.”

This was the first of five public hearings scheduled in each county.

The next one will be this afternoon at the OMB building in Manhattan, on Greenwich Street.

The board is expected to vote on the matter on June 13.

A mayoral spokesman said New Yorkers are paying on average less for water than Americans in other metropolitan areas.
