A new type of treatment against severe heartburn may be the solution for those who no longer know what to do against persistent burning. It is the RefluxStop, a silicone device a little smaller than a table tennis ball implanted in the stomach.

Heartburn is an discomfort or burning that is felt between the pit of the stomach and the throat. When it is regular, it is due to a weakness or failure of the lower esophageal sphincter – a valve at the top of the stomach that allows food to pass through. If it doesn’t close properly, stomach acid can back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

Despite being a common problem, often triggered by eating certain foods, acid reflux can cause serious complications in the esophagus, including cancer.

RefluxStop

The RefluxStop device helps relieve heartburn by putting gentle pressure on the esophageal sphincter, helping to keep it closed and preventing acid leakage. However, it does not exert enough pressure to prevent swallowing.

According to gastrointestinal surgeon Paul Goldsmith of the England’s National Health ServiceRefluxStop allows you to maintain the natural anatomy of the esophagus, treating acid reflux without affecting the passage of food.

For now, the device is only available privately in the UK. Goldsmith says the procedure is suitable for all patients with reflux disease and hopes the method will soon be rolled out more widely.
